Default Steering box question

I was wondering if anyone knows if a 67/68 steering box/shaft will fit in a 65. I found one locally and the box is nice and tight vice the loose one we have in our 65. I know that the box and steering shaft are two seperate pieces and if it will fit that I will need to take the shaft with the box. Help me if you can. Thanks.

I do not believe that they are interchangable. I think that the 65-66 uses a long shaft while a 67-70 uses a short shaft. If you have an early 67 I believe that they used the long shaft but almost all 67-68's used the short shaft boxes.

might also have a different ratio depending on if it came out of a power assist steering non power.... I think i paid right around189 for my rebuilt box at advance auto... It was the least expensive i could find but there is 150 dollar core charge or something like that. THat was for a 69 tho. Im not sure if they would carry a 65 gearbox... its worth a look tho

Yeah, the problem with our 65's is the steering shaft and the box are one. No rag joint.

yes it will work but ull need the corresponding steering column also

also u can adjust the slack in the box buy loosening the nut on top and turning the screw in the center till the slack is gone then tighten down the jamb nut again

not a bad mod...the later columns are collapsible the early ones not.

Well this mod has gone the way of the Dodo bird. The guy at the yard wanted 250 for botht the steering box and column. I can get a re-manned box for my 65 for 200 at Johns Mustangs. It was worth a look and a try.

Wow..what a ripoff.

But yes, it's a doable mod. The box needs to be an early 67 box with the smaller output shaft so it will fit your pitman arm. You would need to come up with a 68 collapsible steering column and figure out how to mount it. Also you'd need the rag joint assembly. I started this project, but found my hydraulic clutch interfered. so I sold off all the parts.

and yes, I drove to John's mustang and picked up a rebuilt. It is quite nice.
