B&M 80842 PRO RATCHET RACE SHIFTER
An aftermarket gate shifter shifts similar to a a standard automatic shifter: when you shift from one gear up into another: 1) the stick moves forward into the the next gear and 2) you hear (and feel) a positive click of the shifter mechanism passing into the next gate of the shift sequence. Often times to go from 1 to 2, all you have to do is slam the thing into the next gear, but to go from 2 to 3 (or D) you have to squeeze the trigger on the stick in order to disengage the small lockout pin that keeps the shifter from slipping out of the second gear gate and going into 3rd (or worse.....Neutral or Reverse!)

Now a ratchet shifter works a little differently. The stick on a ratchet, while in gear while always remain stationary, and then when you're ready to shift, you push the stick forward. You will hear a "ratcheting" noise, and on the shift indicator, you will see the gears change from 1 to 2, and 2 to 3, and so on. A ratchet is great for making quick up or down shifts, all the while keeping the stick in the same position. Ratchets can be abused pretty hard and they provide a positive up/dowshift "ratchet" noise, but they can be a little more physically demanding than gate shifters.
Now the one you're lookin at is NOT a ratchet, its a gate shifter Yes thats a nice one, its kind of ugly though.
The one negative thing to ratchet shifters is that it can be very easy to lose track of what gear your in because the stick stays in a stationary position. In a race situation or even in normal driving, it can be a bit dangerous if you have to look down for a second to check the indicator and see what gear you are in. That's why I prefer gate shifters because along with the same positive "click" that you get from a ratchet, you also get the movement in between gears along with it.
I also forgot to mention that on both ratchet and gate shifters, most all have a reverse lockout system, which is the little red lever at the front of the shifter body. In order to get into reverse (and also park) you have to engage this switch forward and then shift into reverse or park.

okay.... i bought the pro ratchet..... is it easy to install or do i have to remove the transmission?
The shifter comes with the cable and the necessary brackets to install it. No, you don't need to remove the tranny. From the sounds of things, I would have a professional install it and adjust it for you. It took me several times to adjust the cable so that it shifted correctly according to what gear the indicator said it was supposed to be in.
