Electric Cooling Fan Conversion : Wiring?
I'm considering the swap from mechanical to electric fan on my '65, 6 cyl. car. How does the wiring/thermostat work?
My stock instrument cluster gauge works, and I see the sending unit wired from the back of the head, but how do most aftermarket companies engineer the electrical message to the cooling fan?
(I'd prefer it set automatically rather than having to install and mess with a manual switch)
Thanks!

Most electric fan kits come with a temperature probe that you push into the fins on the radiator. That probe is wired to an adjustable control box which is, in turn, wired to the fan and the car. If your electric fan kit doesn't come with the wiring kit, you can buy them at just about any auto parts store. I got a generic kit for a different vehicle over the weekend for about $25.00.
Thanks.
I went ahead and called the tech line at Hayden, and they explained it exactly as you did. I'll probably snag the adjustable control unit.

Is your alternator up to the task? Some of these can take as much as 50 amps (though I think the early model single fans take closer to 20) and the stock alternator is only rated to something like 38 amps, I believe. Put in some modern halogen lights, a fancy stereo, an electronic ignition and voila!
Just saying is all ...
