Bad idle problems, she's too fast... or is she?
woo hoo glad that worked for you. There is a fast idle adjustment screw that is only visible when you pull the throttle all the way back. Pull that screw out a little bit so it is not so fast, but faster than a normal idle. This fast idle is for when the choke and engine are cold, so as already stated will help it warm up fast.
or just tap the gas
or just tap the gas
lol I live in mesa arizona where we have hot and hotter with a high of 125 and lows in 30's in the winter I doubt I'll have too much trouble starting this thing even in the cold haha. I'll probably just keep taping it and scaring little children in the parking lots.

As soon as I read "I tried adjusting the idle screw on the new carb but now the lever doesn't even touch it and still wont slow down." I figured it was the fast idle cam that was causing the high idle. Let the car warm up and make sure the choke is open and the fast idle cam isn't engaged, then throw a portable tach on there and adjust the idle speed.
hmm wouldn't know where to get a prtable tach or hook it up for that matter lol. I understand everything else you said though. I'll have to look where that screw is. I got the carb from holley so shouldn't be hard to check.
Any good auto parts store will probably have several different types of Tach/voltage gauges. Most have two wires with alligator clips that attach to the battery (for voltage) and battery/coil (for RPM). Mine has a dwell gauge as well, but I've got PerTronix so I don't need to worry about that.
I noticed no one mentioned the throttle return spring. I had the same problem with my 302. Turned out that the throttle return spring was pretty old and fatigued. It wasn't closing the throttle fully back to idle position. Replaced the spring with a newer stiffer one and was good to go.
Just a thought...

Well rebuilt but close enough and as for the other springs they werent even hooked up since my linkage was off at the time as well. I just have to get everything in order and figure out what I'm going to work on first. The engine is running... odd. don't know if it's my timing or my idle really. But it just seems ruff. idle is fine but when I put it into gear it seems just off.. It almost stalled on me when I put it in reverse so something is going on. More detective work haha. I dont think I'm qualified for this one.
