289 VS. 351W
ORIGINAL: 69mach1377
Here...here on the 351. Once again, facts speak louder than opinions. Given the same weight, drive train, tires etc...a car with more power and torque will always run faster than one with less power and torque, no matter what someone thinks or says. Physics just rules...don't even argue.

IIRC, they actually oil a bit too good. You need to restrict the flow to the heads in most HP applications. I don't remember if they suck the oil pan dry like FE's but the flow has to be restricted to provide adequate pressure to the bearings.
My understanding of the Cleveland woes was that the heads oiled good and bottom not so good. So for high revvers, oil restrictors were sometimes used to help out, like 69FECoupe said. The selling point of a Cleaver was that the bottom (Windsor style) end oiled better than the Cleveland style bottom, and the heads flowed much better than Windsor style heads, so it was the best of both worlds, at the time. Nowadays, with so many aluminum aftermarket heads available, it is no longer the case. Bottom line, flow more air in and out, via heads, cam and cubes, and get more power and torque.
Deck hieght of 351W is differant than 289. You need some special exhaust system work or some expensive headers. Stick with 289. BTW, you need a special motor mount for the 351 or it won't sit in the right place. Use a '69 Mustang 351W mount. Buy it at NAPA store.........
