electric choke
The choke being closed when starting a cold engine is correct. Next step would be to see if it is getting fuel and spark. Since it does actually start, I'm guessing it has both. So, is it getting the correct amount of fuel (clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, unadjusted carb, maybe even bad fuel)? Or the correct spark (bad coil/cap/rotor/wires/plugs, incorrect timing)?

I'm guessing even though your car starts, your choke is not operating correctly. It is probably not opening which means your air/fuel mixture will be rich once the car warms up. I'm not sure what problems could occur in the future, other than poor fuel mileage or maybe fouled plugs. Hopefully someone else will chime in with their two cents.

sry to steal the thread but i have an extremely similar issue; on the 1 bbl carb it seems to be missin the same tube that leaves the choke housing. where does this go on the I6 since this tube seems to have been removed by the PO. thanks alot and sry again
The tube runs down to the exhaust manifold where it sticks into the manifold and runs up to the round black choke mechanism. When the engine warms up, the heat from the manifold travels up through the tube, warms up a spring in the black thing and as the spring relaxes, it opens the butterfly on the choke. Without the tube, you will need to devise a manual choke so you can open the butterfly yourself.
