Timing 289 en 302 the same ?
Hi, I bought a '66 convertible last year, and had to rebuild the engine. So I got me a workshopmanual for the '66. But when I pulled the engine, I noticed it was a 302 from '70.
Last weekend I got the engine running (still stalls in idle), and I want to ajdust the timing with a stroboscope, and adjust the dwell also if necessary.
First question : Do I adjust dwell and then timing, or first timing and then dwell ?
Second question : Are the specifications I found in the shopmanual the same for a 302 engine ?
Third question : I read you have to adjust the timing on different rpm's, but how is that possible without changing the settings at idle ?

I don't know about dwell but as for the different timing, that's the total timing they're talking about. With the rpms up 3000-4000 with full advance you want a total of about 32* on normal compression. Now someone with more knowledge on stock can correct me but I run a higher advance 36* with better gas (96) and higher compretion...And of course this all changes if your running a supercharger...
I have always set the points befrore and after I set the timing, but if I am in a hurry, I set the points after I set the timing. The timing changes the points setting, so it just makes sense to set the points after the timing. I no longer have to fool with that though. I have the pertronix.
Does anybody want to buy a real cheap dwell gauge?
