Silver Pony pretty muchsaid all of it. I just came upstairs from working on my suspension.

You will need 4 jackstands, floor jack, the complete set of wrenches and sockets, a sawzaw with acouple fine blades or a cutting wheel(grinder with a cutting blade), the hand sledghammer for knocking the balljoints apart, a CENTER spring compressor(1 piece), and a another person for removing the differential. I did it myself but do not advise it haha

Might need a pickle fork to get the ball joints loose.

I pulled out the rear axle on my 71 myself.

1) get the car up on stands (no stands under rear axle, you can leave the wheels on).
2) Loosten U-bolts, shackles, and front spring mount.
3) Support rear axle with jack.
3) Remove rear shackes and lower axle with jack.
4) Remove u-bolts.
5) Remove bolt from front spring mount and remove springs.

Install is also easy, about the heaviest thing you have to handle is the leaf springs, but you only have to lift one end.

The front bolts in the leaf springs rarely come out easily and 9 out of 10 times need cut out.

Might need a pickle fork to get the ball joints loose.
You shouldnt use a pickle fork on ball joints if you plan on reusing them since you can easily screw them up. If you smack the spindle where it connects to the joint acouple times, they usually fall apart...

+1 on using the ole smack it with a hammer trick. Pickle forks tend to tear things up.
