Default Oil Change

Check this out!!\I went to Jiffy lube to get my oil changed in my 66 coupe. The lube technician couln't get the hood open, no automatic release!! So I got to help out first opening the hood, and then going down below to check out the underside of my ride's condition. It looked pretty sweet. They didn't have an oil filter so i bought my own K&N oil filter so they could install it. Just think I got to change my oil with a lift, so to speak without having to get rid of the old oil and jack the car up and break my back for just $40 bucks. i got the high mileage pennzoil 10 W 30. I think it took about 5 qts maybe a little more???/ Spending the nextra few $$$ to check out the underside was worth it. What do you guys think?????

The more often you can get under your car to inspect it the better. However, 40 bux for a dino oil change sounds high to me, and especially since you furnished the filter. That's like 8 bux a quart. I don't pay that much for synthetic for the Mach. I know some guys don't want to change their own oil, but I have since I was a kid, and can't break the habit.

Soaring,
+1 on changing my own oil!! But it was a nice day and to get the car out of the garage for a nice ride and on a whim getting the oil change in was a bonus. I know it sounds like a lot of monet for a mere oil change but just to get a peek without jacking up and placing jackstands on all corners was worth it's weight in gold(the price per quart)!!. I have been under the car quite tightly and this time I could stand and really get a close look. Just too bad that I didn't bring my digital camera to snap a few pics!!! thanks for your opinion thou!!!

To me, this is a prime example why you shouldn't take any car to one of these quickie lube places. They hire mostly highschool students and drop outs who have been known to do things like drain the transaxle instead of the oil, cross thread the drain plug, strip the drain plug, or plain forget to refill the oil. I finally got my wife to let me start doing the maintenance on her baby ('95 Mustang Cobra), andit was obvious thatboth oil drain plugs had not been removed the last time she had the oil changed. Additioanlly, the no-name oil filter they usedwas just over half as long as the Wix oil filter that I bought. I figure that can't be good. If you don't want to change the oil yourself, I always recommend keeping an eye out for oil change specials in the paper and using a mechanic. If it's an independent, they might even let you get under the car and take a look at it too.

The nice part about this oil change was that they basically let me stay with the car and do the oil change from a director's standpoint. I made sure everything was done to the tee!!! I supplied the oil filter K&N and made sure they would not f&%k up with the basics of all basics.

I understand the opportunity to get to walk around under your car and check out everything, and you must pay for that opportunity. Obviously, you didn't find anything wrong under there, so that gives you some peace of mind. Now, for the next 4 oil changes, do it yourself.

+2 on the DYI. Gives a good opportunity to check the belly of your steed. Never know what you will find under there (for me its usually Groundhog grease). And besides, theres no way I'll let someone else get that personal with my girl. Beware the technician that can't open a hood, for he is an idiot.
