On these old Mustangs there were no VIN's stamped in the blocks of transmissions. All you can do is make sure it is a block from the right general era. They did have date codes on the sheet metal parts. This really only makes a difference if you are buying something very rare. If you just want to restore something I would get something in good condition and don't worry about matching numbers.
Sorry man, 66's did not have VIN numbers on the engine block (other than K-codes) so there is no such thing as "numbers matching" for 66 Mustangs. I'm not sure about the tranny, I do not think they had VIN numbers on them (except maybe a 4-speed?) as well. It is kind of like when someone says they did a frame off restoration on their Mustang, Mustangs do not have frames, so you cant doa frame off restoration. Forddid notput VIN numbers on their engineblocks till 1968.
bjktz unfortunately it is not such a thing as a matching # on a 66 except a K code the only thing that you can find are engine cast numbers removing the starter and on the maniful and in some cars you can still find the aluminum tags attach to the engine carburqtor steering box trasmission and ( I think ) on the rear end, then check the date on manufacture of the car and if the casting # and the tags indicate that thos parts are with in 3 to 4 weeks before you can safe asume that they are the original parts and the car is "original enclose is some of the pics of the casting and aluminum tags # hope this help you

I forgot to mention that the serial # on the driver's inner fender mach the ID tag on the driver's door, the other tag is attach to the inner fender on the passenger side ( no tag if the car isassambled on San Jose CA) give you all the info such as body, color, trim, date of manuf, D.S.O, axle and trans... the one on the door give you the year, plant, body series engine and the unit #...but many of the tags if any work such as driver's door change, work on the inner fender, on the engine, carb etc were never replaced and gone to the trash..here are some pics of engine tag
