Petronics / ignition /coil ????
I had the points replaced with petronics last year on the coupe. The car has started up 9-10 times on the first try (unless its really cold) since then. It sometimes wants to lag/wine on startupand I figured it was just because she is a 40+ year old. Yesterday I drove her 40+ miles and parked for about 2 hrs. On startup she really hesitated and continued to do that during the next 1/2 hour (numerous startups on stop/go traffic).
Spoke to a couple of stang owners and they said it may be due to not replacing the coilwhen i installedthe new petronics??
The plugs and wires were checked out when I got her a 1 1/2 ago, could it be in need of replacements?
Thanks

Oddly enough, these coils are marked either 6 or 12 volt. If you have a 12 volt coil, and you are getting your power from the 12v source, you will have not problems. But, if you still have the 6V coil, then you need to bypass the pink resistor wire and hook directly to the iginiton switch. I have a couple of articles relegated to this subject in the FAQ. Look under the electronics section at the bottom of the FAQ.
Thanks Soaring, I will look it up on the FAQ.
Also, how do you get the graphics done with your stangs on your signature block??
Is there a TRICK on working with the search box, I have tried looking up key words but it gives me a no match reply for words such as disc, ignition etc??

when I got my ride I got rid of the points and went with pertronix,,also bought the flame thrower coil and new plug wires to eliminate any future issues,,also taped into the ignition wiring to be sure to have 12 volts to make it all happen and it starts/runs like a champ,,,the only time I have starting/running issues is when I mess with the timing and/or carb ( always looking for best MPG with gas prices being what they are) I know when I putz around,,, I don't have to worry about ignition issues,,just undo or re-adjust what ever I did,,as to getting 12 volts,,,if you look at the pink wire right off the ignition switch,,you'll see a kinda buldge in the wire approx 3 inches or so from the switch,,use a electrical vampire tap type connecter to get the 12 volts before the "buldge/resister"...hope this helps
OK, i read the FAQ, should i just get the flame thrower coil to go with the new ignitor? or use current one?
Also, how can you tell if the coil in the car is 6 or 12 volts??
thanks

It will have written 6 or 12 right on the coil. You don't need to buy the new ignitor coil. Just run a wire from the ignition to the coil you already have. Yeah, if you want a fancy sig pic, send your pics to the Chop shop and have them do one for you, Actually, I like the one you already have. It is unique.
