Default 69 Mach 1 Alt wiring problems

I bought a '69 Mach 1 with a 1972 351 Cleveland Engine with 65 Amp Alt and wiring harness. The people at NAPA said that the 65 Amp is all that is available. The wiring going to the alt is right, but the connector tying it to the wiring harness was mixed up, wrong colors. This burns up the amp meter and discharges the battery.
I bought the right wiring harness for the 69 but it only has 3 wires - the ground, the field and the battery.
The old one has four wires, one going to the stater and a bigger wire to the battery post.
How is the 69 suppose to be wired? Do you have to have the stater wire hooked up to work? Do I have the wrong Alt? This car does not have a tach.
Thanks in advance,
Tom
