Default c-6 to c-4

Alright guys I got a 429 73 Mach and I'm diving head first into swaping the heavy C-6 for the lighter C-4, 50 extra ponies comin my way, hehe.

What I have: What I know I need: Questions on:
Bellhousing New lines Can I use my existing flexplate?
Pan fill C-4 Shortened driveshaft I need the 11 7/16" Converter?
C-4 Crossmember Rebuildkit

Anyone's who's done this swap before any info would be greatly appreciated

Yeah, usually it's the other way around. You might want to re-think this. You will need to beef up the C4 anyway. Bore and stroke that bad 429 and put on a blower. Yeeeeeee, doggies.

yup.. c6 well worth its weight tuff trans...my cj has a c6 with small bell housing..3,000 rpm stock torque converter...9inch traction lock rear end..allways gives me a peice of mind knowing my runing gear is over built

Many 1972-1974 351C-4V CJ engines were matedto Ford's C6 automatic transmission.Ford used a specialhigh-stall (3000 RPM) torque converter (D20Z-7902-A) andflywheel(D1ZZ-6375-C).<<~~i found that info while researching my ride..lol

They stopped puting the 429's in the mustangs after 71, mine was orignally a 302/fmx set up.

I know the c6 is stronger but there are plenty of 460's w/ a c4 behind them, the weight and the horsepower gains, in my mind, are worth it, and w/ the 6 pinion planitary goin in the c4 she's not gonna bust unless i put slicks on, which i dont plan on doing. as long as i keep the tires as the weekest link, i'll be ok.

on a side not i found some D0VE heads, ported and polished w/ cj valves, 500 for the set, hehe

+1 for upgraded planetaries.... i blew mine out once, and rebuilt everything with stock planetaries again but beefed up everything else. only time will tell if it will get destroyed (they didnt actually come apart but the gear was walking thru the housing that holds the 3 together.

{but there are plenty of 460's w/ a c4 behind them}

over built tci street fighter trans will handle a big block..but not stock i dont think..think the biggest motor ford put the c4 on was a 351m..the 355 blocks..and those are rare...tci does over build some c4s for this app.....average c4 tci handles up too 300 horse...but if your worried about weight..you shouldnt have a big block in the first place hehe

couldnt find the weight on a c4 vs c6...the c6 is about 200 pounds..and a manual trans is about 125...im sure a c4 is about 150....but thats just a guess from what i seen...you mite be able to shave off 50 or 60 pounds or more..but is it worth it?..you could shave off more weight putting in a stroked out 355 block or 351w...could save about 250 to 300 pounds compaired too just 50 pounds....filling up a half tank of gas will save you that much

Bellhousing? If you have a C6, you really don't have a bellhousing, as it's integral with the tranny.
