Default C-4 Leaky Shift Linkage

I havea 1968 Coupe 289 2bbl with a C-4 tranny. I got a leak where the shift rod comes out of the transmission and the Neutral safety switch. I assume an O-ring or seal went bad. Is iteasy to fix or is it a major disassembly to get at that seal? Should I let a tranny place do it? If so, anybodygot a guess on how much. The weather is still bad here and I haven't had a chance to drive it for a quote. The tranny works great justthe leak.

Thanks all,

I just so happened to have had a C4 appart a few weeks ago.

Yes there is a seal in there , it sounds like it has gone bad. I have never replaced that seal. But you will have to disconnect all the shift linkages and saftey switch. Drop the pan remove the filter and valve body. Then you can access the shift linkage inside the Transmission. It appeared as though you could take the inner linkage off of the shaft via one nut if i recall. From there i would ASSUME you can pull that small shaft out and replace the seal.

Okay I did some Paint art for you here. This would be a cut away of the tranny if you were looking at it from say the tail shaft.
You can see where you would have to remove the linkages on both the outside and inside of the transmission. Once you do that i would THINK you can slide that little shaft out and replace the seal that is there. Just be carefull when you put the valve body back in that the inner shifting linkage is in the right position. I would just make sure to have the car in park and make sure the linkages go back on the way they came off kind of thing. Hope this helps.

If any of this is incorrect someone feel free to correct me.

Awesome...thanks for the drawing scott_m_mil. It does not look to bad to do. I appreciate your time.
