Default Dynoed the 66...

Hey guys, i dynoed the 66 fastback yesterday and HATED the power it made...i'm being told that these numbers are quite normal so you all let me know...

These are my power mods: 650 speed demon carb, rpm air gap intake, hooker super comp ceramic coated headers, 2.5 inch exhaust with x pipe, and maganflow mufflers.

These are my support mods: MSD pro billet distributer, MSD 6AL ignition box, MSD wires, MSD blaster 2 coil, holley mechanical fuel pump and regulater.

The car is a 289 (originally a 2 brrl), 4 spd tranny, fastback. The car dynoed 190 rwhp238 rwtq SAE. I was hoping for at least 200 rwhp. I was running 12 degrees intial timing and 93octane gas. The temperature was 94 degrees down here in south texas. My future plans are a cam and some afr's but now i'm rethinking this whole 289 thing...the car feels VERY strong and pulls VERY hard so when i saw the numbers it surprised the hell out of me!! I guess the car is light and may be why it feels so responsive. So do you all think these numbers are where its suppose to be?????

190 at the wheels sounds like a strong 289 to me. Hell, I doubt I get that at the flywheel. You are not running much over stock A Code equipment, so you are just about right.

yup, its pretty much stock but with better aftermarket parts...it's no 03 mach 1 i'll tell ya that though!! I miss my mach as far as speed goes but hey...this one turns more heads!!

I had a 66 fairlane 500 with a 289, 3 spd on the column, with a rpm intake, 750 holley, dynomax headers, flowmasters, lunati 512 lift cam, and some 4.10's and the car went 14.1 on street tires...and it weighed alot more...so i'm just missing a nice little cam...makes me think what power the fairlane was putting out...not much more huh?

That is really disappointing, I would have expected at least 225. I thinkthat289 should have had 200hp stock though, but what would I know, I'm just a kid.

If your using a factory cam, there is a lot of potential you aren't using yet. Another possibility is the tunning on the carb, actually a 650 seems rather big for a 289, you might find that a small carb can make MORE power. And honestly if the car has the power you want when driving, what does it matter what the dyno says.

yup, its still a factory cam...i'm sure with some nice heads and nice cam it'll really bring the numbers up...the carb is a 650 but i bought it with the intent of providing better heads and cam in the very near future...

as far as dyno's go...its the number at the track that counts and not the dyno...i was just curious as to where the car stood...my previous car (03 mach 1) only had 313 rwhp BUT it went 11.9 @ 114 mph n/a stock motor...i would like to have 300 rwhp on the 289...i might be stretching it huh!!

Stock, the '03 Mach was rated at 305 hp at the engine. Were they tremendously undervalued or what did your "stock motor" have to make it dyno about 50 hp than it should've?

I'd say your 190 rwhp is pretty good for a 289 with original heads and cam. My brother's '66 vert with a rebuilt '85 5.0L HO with the stock roller cam, mild porting on the head, tri-y headers, edelbrock manifold and carb turned in 195 rwhp.

the 03 mach 1 was a stock uncracked longblock...it had pullies, headers, exhaust, cold air kit, and a tune....that brought the motor up to 313 rwhp SAE...i had a bunch of suspension mods and different tranny...when i said stock, i meant that the motor had never been open...not even a valve cover...

so those numbers are right then?

I have a question...on a 4 spd car...what gear is the car suppose to be in when on the dyno? On a 5 spd car it would be 4th gear....on a 4 spd car would it be 3rd? I tested it out in 4th gear....was i wrong?
