Default Missing Dataplate

hi all. I was wondering if anyone could help me. I purchased a 66 mustang coupe and after inspecting the driver-side door, i noticed that the vin on the dataplate didn't match my vin #. Here i found out that the door was replaced with a 65. Ihave decoded what i can about my car from the vin #, but can't get any info about the tranny, interior, axle, etc.

Is there anywhere where someone might have this info on file? Ford or somewhere? I noticed in the door jamb by the door hinges is a Tennessee state plate stamped with the vin #. Don't know what that is there for but it matches my Vin on the title.

thanks for all the help.

Most of the data plate items can be figured out by looking at the items you have now. In all likelihood, your car has probably not been regeared or had a tranny swap. To find out your paint color, look behind the door panels. Even if the interior color was changed, you'll likely find some of the original color somewhere on the door frame behind the splashshields or behind the window felts. For the body color, even the best painter is not going to be able to hide all the original spray. Look under the carpet if all else fails.

The only things you won't know with any certainty are the build date and district order code.
