Default Engine Number

This may be a dumb question but where would I find the engine number on a 66 Mustang with a 289 Windsor? I have looked everywhere but can not find one. I have heard that they never came out with an engine number, is this true? If it is supposed to have an engine number in what format would the number be. alpha/numerics?? number of digits??

Take the starter off, and you will see the number on the block behind the starter.

To my knowledge, all they had were casting numbers that were raised numbers on the block. The TRUE and original hi-po had a yellow paint swatch on the rear behind the flywheel. You may need to look at the crank number. Again just a casting number, but if you have a true hi-po the main bearing caps are noticeably larger as are the rods.

I'd love to find out about mine as well. just to lazy to pull off the starter. looks like a bigger job for just a starter ..... Could whip em for hiding the block number there. kinda stupid

If you are speaking of a number used for identification purposes such as used to be on titles etc there is none.

However if the engine has not been messed up by some previous eager beaver then there should be an engine tag. It is about 5/8 inch by 1 1/4 inch and usually (But not always) resided under the coil mounting bracket.

It carries the build date, the engine designation which was a code to indicate intended usage (equipment, trans, other accesories) engine plant and other stuff which I have forgotten over the 30 years since I left FoMoCo.

The article that Soaring refer you to is rigth regarding the engine tag they are easily lost if any work was done on the engine or replace with another not the original that was on the car...two days ago was one on EBay from a 66 that the successful bider pay $30 for it..I am lucky to have the original this is how the look
