Default Suggestions for performance upgrades

I was just wondering if any body could suggest performance mods and order. I have a 68 coupe with a 289 and auto tranny. I was thinking of drums to disk upgrade then exhaust. I like it to be able to stop and breathe but after that I would like to get some opinions.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Sounds good to me. Are you going to stop there or is that just a start? If you are going to do a lot of work to your motor, start with your heads. You can get alot of horses from there. Don't go cheap.

After doing a little reading I was looking for opinions on whether to work on getting the 289 2v into something comparable to a 302 BOSS intake/carb->holley/cam and thanks to your input heads. I dont want to put more than 5K more after the exhaust and brakes. I was considering a 351W but I think I would have to replace tranny and rear end. I don't think it would the c6 but something like thrumax???

351W maybe the most cost effective way to go. C-4 will work fine but I'd be thinking of a 9" rear end. With that year car, be sure and get motor mounts for a '69 Mustang w/351W or you will have hood clearance issues.......

Almost always stay will a 289. It is one of the best motors that ford has. The 289 is a quick rev motor and it is one of the fastest motors off of the line. Stay with the the 289.

If you are just looking to upgrade to a good performing street package by all means start with your brakes and suspension. Add a good flowing exhaust and a decent intake/carb package. Don't go too big on the carb. A posi with 3.50 or so gears will make a big difference. If your pocketbook allows, install a warmer cam and aftermarket heads. This should get you to the 300 HP area. Now consider this. A stock '69 351w 4v was rated at 290 HP. The same bolt-ons would get that 351 to the 350+ HP range for virtually the same cost.
