Default Some ?'s.

Im gettin my car out this weekend to get it inspected n i wanna go through some things. Im not gonna be drivin the car in cold weather, so is a thermostat that important? Also, what degree should i get, 160, 180? Also there is no need to replace the heater core since i'll never be usin it right?, im askin cuz the car came witha new one. Also i was wonderin if anyone knew what the flud capacity was on a 68 C4? n would a local parts store have the tranny filter. And what about the rear end fluid, what grade and how much? I kno its stupid, but im not sure if its a 9 inch rear. or what.

OK, I can answer some of those. The thermostatIS important. You want one that opens at 192 degrees. You don't need to replace your heater core if your not going to be needing heat (unless it has a leak) but that heat could come in handy for defrosting a foggy windshield. Don't know the fluid capacity but you're going to want to use ATF transmission fluid. If you have an Advance Auto Parts they carry the Tranny filter... http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...58&PTSet=A You can go on line and check Auto Zone too I imagine.

To add to what sxs191 said, Autozone does carry the correct ATF fluid. You need a thermostat to help the engine warm up quickly even in the summer. If you don't need the heat, you can bypass the heater core and just clamp the two heater hoses together or have a single hose tieing the inlet and outlet on the water pump together. I believe the recommendedrear differential fluid is 90W (that's something I need to take care of soon as well). I would defintiely need to look up the fluid capcities though. My recently purchased '68 Mustang just had the transmission rebuilt before I bought it; so, I haven't had to look for a transmission filter and don't know if the nationwide chains carry them, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Yes, the thermostat is important to get your engine up to operating temperaturte as soon as possible. Your engine will run more efficiently and you will have less wear and tear on the engine with a thermostat. The C4 holds 5 1/2 quarts of Type F ATF. The converter holds another 5 quarts. For the differential, take your car to an oil change place and get themto drain out all your old oil. Have them add 75W90 synthetic gear oil. You won't need to worry about whether it is an 8" or a 9". They will fill it up until it drips out of the filler hole. If you are curious about which rear you have, go to the FAQ and look in the differential section.

and why would i have to take the car to an oil change place to get the rear end fluid changed?

You need to take your car to an oil change place unless you have a pump or some way to get the gear oil back in the rear. If you do have a pump then you can do it yourself, but then you have to deal with getting rid of the old gear oil.
On your tranny fluid change. Buy yourself 12 quarts of Type F fluid, and buy a clear 1/2" hose about 6 feet long and a hose clamp. Now crawl under the car and take the cooling line off at the transmission. Put that hose on the line with a hose clamp. Get a buddy to help you. Your wife or girlfriend will be just fine. Get some empty milk jugs, big wine bottles or anything you can drain the old fluid into and can be thrown away. Put the hose into your first jug. Start the car and put it in drive. Drain exactly 4 quarts of fluid. Shut off the car and put 4 new quarts in the filler tube. Start the car and drain 4 more quarts. Add 4 new quarts. Do this 1 more time until you have used all 12 quarts. Now, you have changed not only the transmission, but the converter as well. Believe me, this is a lot less messy than taking off the pan. If you are going to change out the filter, then you will need to take the pan off to do that. After the pan is back on, fill the tranny with 5 quarts, then drain 5 quarts, then add 5 quarts, then drain2 quarts, then add two quarts. If the fluid is too high, drain about 1/2 quart and recheck. If it is too low, add an necessary. Reattach the cooler line and you are ready to roll.
