Rear end gaskets
I have a 1970 Boss 302. After reinstalling the axles, I noticed that some illustrations showed 1 gasket per side and others showed 2. Unfortunaltely, I noticed this after the installation. I put the gaskets between the flange and the brake back plate. I didn't put a gasket bewteen the bearing retaining plate and the brake backing plate. Is the gasket between the brake backing plate and the bearing retaining plate necessary? It doesn't appear to be there for leak prevention since there is a gap between the bearing retaining plate and the axle. I would prefer not to have to tear it apart again but will do so if it is necessary. Thanks for your help in advance.
my opinion on the matter is somewhat uneducated, but I do not see where the gasket would be needed. I know on my son's axle there pas no gasket between the caliper mount and the housing.
If you used the same Fel-Pro gaskets that I have, they are about .010" thick. When I tore my axle apart there were steel gaskets, which of course I filed in the trash can not thinking that they may be handy. The gaskets don't provide a seal, but they do act as spacers, so by only using one, you moved your retainer about .010" closer to the end of the housing, which should be OK, I would only be leery about going the other way, because if you had too many gaskets, you would have end play (the bearing and axle could slip in and out of the housing end a few thousandths. I would not worry about it.
