Default starter

Can a bad starter kill your battery, I have been having problems with something killing my battery( Short/or ground issues) well the other day I was jumping off my mustang, the battery was close to dead, so while jumping the starter will not stop spinning, even while the car was running, and I had a hard time trying to get it the stop. I was really freaking out, but it finally stopped. What causes a starter to do that and is it going bad?
I removed the neg cable from the solenoidthat runs to the starter and see if that is my issue with the battery.
Thanks
