Default Ford Hemi thread

Sincethe Mopar crowd have been removed to talk about their hemi's elsewhere we can talk Ford Hemi's here exclusively.
Just some facts,I am sure other's have more to add.
Ford was building Hemi engines for tanks in the 40's
Ford built the SOHC 427 (which had hemispherical combustion chambers) to combat Chrysler at Nascar, but Bill France wouldn't let Ford run it ,it made to much power. So the Ford crowd wentdrag racing with the Cammer with greatresults.
Ford developed the Boss 429 engine to beat Chrysler and had to produce 500 street cars with the engine before Bill France would let them run.
They ran so well on Nascar tracks that even King Richard Petty switched for a season to Ford's Boss 429 program so he could win some races..
Unfortunatly, the Boss 429 program was cancelled after 2 short years and factory engine development was stopped.
But,development in drag racing in Top Fuel,Funny Car,and Pro Stock as well as Can Am racing, and street cars went on.
There is not much better eye candy under a hood than a Ford Boss 429 !!!

They ran so well on Nascar tracks that even King Richard Petty switched for a season to Ford's Boss 429 program so he could win some races..
Actually the reason Petty ran a Ford in 1969 was because Dodge had the Daytona coming out and no plans to build a winged Plymouth. Chrysler wouldn't let Petty switch to a Dodge and he said he wasn't racing a stock Roadrunner vs that winged Dodge. After he defected to Ford Chrysler asked him if we would come back if they built a winged Plymouth. He said he would and they made the 1970 Superbird. That is why he only ran the one year in a Ford.

My other favotite driver, David Pearson, did quite well with the Ford Hemi and we will never know what could have been it the two hemis had been able to run vs the Chevy's without restrictors. Nascar rules have always been slanted towards whoever sells the most cars wins the most races. I guess that puts butts in the seats.

heres a fact for you, petty didnt run the boss 429 engine in 69 he ran the 427 side oiler which i have heard the reason for this is that his brotherand engine builder reese pettywas actually still able to get more out of the 427 hi riser than the 429. if you look at his hoods in 69 on the torino cobra he ran it says 427 ci, not 429 ci like pearson and some of the other ford drivers of the time...

That may have been because they ran restrictor plates on the Boss 429 and not on the 427. Would make sense, but I was only a teen at the time so I am not sure what the rules were that year.

The 427 was only run at the first race of the season, when the Ford teams showed up with Boss 429 Hemi's in their cars Bill France informed them that not enough street cars had been built yet.So, the Ford guys scrambled to switch engines in all the cars and went on to win anyway.
The next race of the season all Ford and Mercury factory teams had the Boss 429 in them and they proceeded to clean house all season.
