Ford Hemi thread
I looked up the winners for 1969-70 by model and make. This includes the 1/2 mile tracks they used to run back then. I put all Fomoco cars together and all Mopars together. There were no Chevy winners I could find.
Fomco 69-70 40 Victories.
Mopar 69-70 62Victories.
GM 69-70 0 Victories (no wonder they were upset)

i asked my grandfather who worked as a score keeper at the races in NC andSCfor some ford teams during the 60's and early 70's he said he never remembered petty running the boss enginebut he said it was because when the boss engine first came out in 69 the race teams that started the season with ford got the boss engines and petty enterprises scrambling to switch manufacturers in one week after the 2nd race of the season bought up old holman moody 427's and after the riverside race in which richard won with the 427 reese petty stuck with building a 427 even after the riverside race which was pettys first for fordbut for the first 2 races of the season before riverside which was the 3rdpetty drove a plymouth, and the sohc 427 was allowed to run in 3 races according to a lee holman interview i saw on speed

Actually the reason Petty ran a Ford in 1969 was because Dodge had the Daytona coming out and no plans to build a winged Plymouth. Chrysler wouldn't let Petty switch to a Dodge and he said he wasn't racing a stock Roadrunner vs that winged Dodge. After he defected to Ford Chrysler asked him if we would come back if they built a winged Plymouth. He said he would and they made the 1970 Superbird. That is why he only ran the one year in a Ford.
My other favotite driver, David Pearson, did quite well with the Ford Hemi and we will never know what could have been it the two hemis had been able to run vs the Chevy's without restrictors. Nascar rules have always been slanted towards whoever sells the most cars wins the most races. I guess that puts butts in the seats.
They ran so well on Nascar tracks that even King Richard Petty switched for a season to Ford's Boss 429 program so he could win some races..

I was at the WORLD 600 when he won his 1st big race with a flat tire, rim worn down to the brake and Fireball Roberts closing at 160 mph.
NOBODY did it better.

heres a fact for you, petty didnt run the boss 429 engine in 69 he ran the 427 side oiler which i have heard the reason for this is that his brother and engine builder reese petty was actually still able to get more out of the 427 hi riser than the 429. if you look at his hoods in 69 on the torino cobra he ran it says 427 ci, not 429 ci like pearson and some of the other ford drivers of the time...
