65 GT
NO...NO...a thousand times...NO!!! The GT package was available from the factory ONLY on 'a' and 'k' code cars. One problem though..you could get it as a dealer installed option. I know of at least one SIX cylinder with a 4-speed that was just such a car. The guys dad wouldn't allow him to have a 289-225 horse 4-speed car in 1965 and the dealer installed the GT equipment on a 4-speed, fastback, pony interior, a-c, power steering car. The guy drank a lot of beer free on that one over the years. (Yes, he kept the paperwork from the dealer.....another reason to get a laugh out of the 'purests')
The GT could only be ordered from the FACTORY with an "A" or "K" code engine. They also had the five gauge cluster instead of "idiot lights", front disc brakes, dual exhaust out the rear valance and a number of other things. Check out this link, http://www.cjponyparts.com/TechRealGT.asp, it may help.
Also keep in mind that even if a dealer installed the "GT options" back in the day, it is still just an appearance package, and not a true GT. There are many ways to tell if the car was orginally a GT from the factory, as the factory did things on the assembly line to allow for the foglights and dual exhaust, among other things.
I just wish the folks that are adding all the GT items would just say it has the "GT Appearance package" rather than trying to claim it as an original. I have a '65 A code, and could add all the GT items and claim it to be original, but anyone who knows what to look for would call my bluff in a heartbeat.

I completely agree with you Aux. People want to make as much money as they can so they install things to make it look like a GT and then try to find a sucker to sell it to. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with people wanting their cars to look like a GT, just don't try and sell like it's an original.

65-66 GT350s were only K codes. I'm not sure if they were K codes in 67 though.

Back in 1965, you could order just about any options you desired, and that included GT options. However, the GT 350 Shelby cars only came with A or K code engines.

For a 1965 Mustang GT, there are ways to indicate a car is not a factory GT. Proving one is is almost impossible as the major options used to make up a GT were available separately: fog lamps, steering wheel, dual exhaust, suspension, disc brakes. There are many subtle parts and assemblies that are part of the GT package but don't show up in sales brochures. Like the headlamp feed harness including the fog lamp feed; fenders that don't have bondo filling up the holes left by ther running horse; bondo filling up the holes for the rocker panel molding on coupes and convertibles. There are more. Ford Motor Company sales figures indicate about 2.7 percent of factory 65 Mustangs had the GT option (4.2 pct for 66), there are a lot of wanna-bes in the world.
