It' easy to wire up but you need to sorce the plug that goes on theside
of the trans. It does the back-up lights to...

It is 4 wires, not 2, so I guess it must be harder than you think.

This is one of those items that they can charge that until somebody else comes up with it cheaper. While you can certainly make something yourself, there will always be a market for a plug-in-play, factory appearing product with the correct wiring terminals. I'd pay it and consider it a drop in the bucket in the long run. YMMV.
