Default Body Alignment

Well, im getting to the fitting of the body panels in this rebuild of my 67. The doors and front fender panels are orginal, howerver i've replaced both rear quater panels. The front fenders and doors line up nicely, but the rear panels are a little bit off. Seeing that its such a solid piece and can pretty much only be fitted into one place does the solution lie with the adjustment of the door? Haven't had a chance to try yet.

OH, and whats the best way to fix the swiss cheese?

Hey your where i want to be right now with my project car. I believe the proper way to put a rear quarter panel on is to start at the front fender and line it up with the door and then line the door up with the quarter panel. Once you know that everything is straight do not remove the doors they will serve as a marking point for poper fit. You will assemble the rear quarters and match them with the door.I can see in your case that you have not done that its ok. Remember that rear quarters are not an exact fit they you will need to trim andmake it fit. Will you be using metal body filler to hide the seem where the rear quarter meets the roof? also i would use a mig welder to fill in that swiss cheese then grind it smooth it will be like it was never there
This will help you read up !

make sure as well that the dor lines up with the rocker panel below it.

so if the gap in the bottom front of the door is bigger than at the bottom back, then I'd say as well: align the door.

+1 to kalli im currently at the same stage. remember the door and the fenders are adjustable in most directions but the quarters arent. Worst Case scenario would be to grind the door and reweld if the skin was shaven down a bit.!

The first thing to do is adjust the door to the quarter and the rocker. That is the most important thing. Once that is done them move on to your fenders. The door in the pic needs to go up and forward.

Well the driprails are shot. I dont know yet if i'll replace them or go driprailess.

Finished up aligning the complete trunk panel, inner and outer fender wells and the taillight panel. Also did a last check with the quaters on there, and the above mentioned items are 100% in place. As you guys mentioned and I've now experienced, those quaters can only be adjust a minute amount. I would probably get them into place this weekend along with the welding of the trunkpanel, complete floor panel and the remainder of the firewall, but I see how a pain in the chocolate starfish this would cause for trying to replace that quater window. Whats youll's opinion on that?

yea, that doesnt work, the metal has rusted paper thin and you just burn through, unless you can get some metal behind it, good luck

On the sail panel the best fix is to cut out an inch or so past the bad metal and make a patch. You will be able to treat any rust on the inner structure at this point. Just remember to measure measure measure. Are they nos or repop 1/4s. I put aftermarket 1/4s on myfathers 66 and had a hard time with the lines ( I now hang doors to the old 1/4 then remove and hang the new one). Plus they are not as rounded as the doors. They look very flat.
