The Ford Falcon Six Cylinder Performance Handbook is the best I've come across on I6 performance mods. Well worth the money if you planning on keeping the I6.
The best site for discussion and questions is the Ford Six Performance site.
The first thing I did was put on a Petronix II electronic distributor, what a difference. Next is the carb and header.
Good luck with your project!

I still think some Nawwzzzzzzzzz is a good power adder for the six. those motors are darn near industructable so a 100 shot on them with some porting, larger diameter exhaust (including the mani), and a 2v carb mod would be good. Mine stock with 260K was able to keep up with a brand new altima 2 years ago when it was on the road.
keep the I6, specially if its whole car is original. Everyone does the v8 swap. They can be a great eng.
v8s are great, but I prefer it when thats what really came with the car. People swap them, then expect to get the v8 price for a actual I6 car.
