Default Distributor static timing.

Battery is charged and ready for another go round of continues cranking. My manual says timing should be at '6B' Does that mean 6BTC? Anyways, I had the crank set at TC and the rotor pointing at plug #1 on the cap (so I thought) but no starting. Should I pull the distr, turn the crank 360 degrees, drop the distr back in and try again? Thanks all. Lost as usual and looking for guidance....

Yes

Pull the #1 spark plug and feel for compression as you rotate the engine, then set TC at the top of that stroke, then restab the distributor. Of course you could just R&R the spark plug wires on the distributor 180 degrees from where they are now to see if this is your problem. (I wouldn't leave them this way - it would be ugly to some.)

Pull #1 plug. Cram a rag in the plug hole using a screwdriver to get it in the hole good. Use a pair of pliers handles to cross over the two big nuts on the starter relay so the engine turns over. As soon as the rag pops out, you will be at top dead center. You can also double check this by putting the screwdriver in the hole to see if the piston is all the way to the top of the cylinder. Now, check to see if the rotor is pointing at about 1:00 O'Clock. If it is, then you have your distributor in right. If it is pointing at 7:00 O'Clock, then it is 180 out.

yah. 180degrees out you get a lot of shaky shaky i'd say

do you have points in your distri ? If yes, let me know and I'll write up how to set that all up.
If you have points you can do a static ignition timining as well if you have one of those 12V testing lamps.

Let me know ....

Kalli

btw ... love the rug method for compression stroke check :-)

I took the points out and put the Pertronix in. I had it at TDC with the rotor at 1:00 and it was popping. Figured I was off by 180 degrees. I will try the rag method when I get home. Thanks.

180* out would make it backfire through the carb.
