If you are building this thing to drive, then I would suggest getting a crate motor. I recently did a complete rebuild on my 351W. By the time the smoke cleared, for about an additional 500.00 I could have had a factory crate motor with all the goodies and none of the aggravation & time spent running between parts houses and the machine shop.

Save yourself the hassle, and in the long term, money and get the crate and bag the 289 and keep it in the corner.

get the 347 and save the 289, if you ever sell the car it would be more desireble if the 289 went with it as many of the purist have said in so many other threads. But look at it this way if beat the hell out of the 347 and some how destroy it they car hasn't lost any value because you still have the 289 rebuit or not. and if that did happen you could be back on the road in a day or two.

I agree withe both of these guys. Save that 289, they are getting harder & harder to find. And crate motors are the way to go. You get a crate 5.0 or 347 and just install it. That's what I did.

as for stroking the 289 with the shorter cylinders when the pistons reach the bottom of the stroke and start back up they will rock a little side ways before they start back up. We had a simalir problem with certain casting number chevy blocks being made into 408s. We found the problem when a customer brang his car back with a knocking noise in his engine after we tore it down and whent thur it thats when we found the problem. Needless to say we do not use that casting number block for those engines any more. and hve taken steps to insure nothing like that is sent to customers.
yup

i'd either rebuild the 289 and run with it, or use a roller 302 block for a stroker. maybe a 331 is in order? 347's are getting played out IMO. theres always the clevor option too, if you wanna get into some wild stuff

ORIGINAL: Stratosphere

Build a 302 bored over with a stroker kit and turn it into a 347. It will be like having the power and torque of a 350 and still be nearly as light as a 289. Can't beat that in my book!

Edit: A 351 Cleveland?! Is it even possible to fit that behemoth in the engine compartment?
A friend of mine in Charleston, SC puts 'c' motors in 65's without cutting the spring towers. If you know the correct header to use all you do is cap each end with the header filled with sand, bolt it to the engine on a stand, heat with torches and gently bend header toward engine and allow to cool in that shape. Than heat lower on header and bend back away form bell-housing. After a few attempts you should have it right and fit the 351 'c' in a 65 and hopefully go like scalded ####.

build the 289, you can get some good power and nice revving out of those things if done properly

I would rather have the 289 for the fact that its a higher winding engine.

the other thing is that im still in highschool, and i still have to get the car bodyworked and painted, and get all of it put back together, and with the power that the 347 is putting out, i figure ill be tearing up transmissions and rearends left and right, whats a transmission (manual) and rearend setup that could handle the power?

oh and, mustanglover66, i would still love to come and see t and l's shop

Rebuild the 289. Keep it original. They can turn rpm's quick, without worrying about blowing it up.
