Default Fastback conversion?

Bout to start work on this 66 coupe. Will be a restomod because it is not matching numbers and is already gutted. Original components are no where to be found. My question is, what does it take to transform a coupe to a fastback. I already need some sheet metal and glass. What am I lookin at? Is it worth it? P.S.: please refrain from ripping me a new one, I am not concerned with the resale value. I love my car and will keep it for the duration? But honestly, fastbacks are KOOL.

those conversions dont ever look like fastbacks, it would be 3 times as cheap to just buy a fastback...fastbacks are cool, but there market is topping out and nicely done non restomod coupes and convertibles are starting to gain a bigger hold in the market again at alot of sales and stuff restomod resale values are going down big time compared to a year ago...

It is possible but from what i have heard you need a donor fastback for the roof, alot of bodywork skill and a lot of money. If you really want one I would just sell the coupe and get the fastback. I say not worth it spend the cash on any bodywork need and then suspension and brakes.

+1

Forgive me for being so blunt, but, you would be a complete *** hole to do that to a beautiful coupe like the one you have there. That thing is in great condition and you're gonna hack away at it like a patient with gangreen?!? WTF dude??

You really want to hack up a 66 and convert it to a F/B, I have a 66 coupe that I will sell to you for $750 you can hack it up and put whatever motor you want in it. I'll include the existing 200ci and C4 that's in it already.

Or you can wait till the end of the year and buy a "67 (HA! YEAH RIGHT!!) FB shell from CJ or one of the other parts guys.

theres been a few post about this it can be done but its alot of money and time and it is really cheaper to buy a fastback. last time i checked for a fastback roof used was 2 grand plus you need the trunk all the glass and alot of trim parts and some of those trim parts are not remade so you have to find them used. keep it a coupe be happy to own a vintage mustang

I've read through every single one of these coupe to fastback conversion threads I could find and I'm hearnig a lot of bias. Yes it can be done and yes it does look like a fastback when finished (if you just take your time and do it right). I've seen a number of them and know of a shop doing one right now. Iwill becoverting a coupeto a fastback within the next 2 - 3 months on my '68 coupe. It has a state-issued VIN becuase it was stolen and all ID tags removed. Yes, I know there are multiple locations for VIN tags / stamps and yes unfortunately I've checked them all to no avail. So I don't mindchopping it up.Oh, and for the record,I'll be doing this conversion without a doner fast back since it's not required.

Believe me, I love my car and couldcare less what anyone says about bastardizing it or anything else of the sort. If I had a numbers matching car that I was concerned with that sort of thing, then I wouldn't even think about it, but this one is a prime candidate. I will start a thread with step by step pics and price updates as I go so you can watch it come together yourself. Hey, if nothing else, I'll make a mistake (which I won't be too proud to post about)doing something everyone else has thought of doing and then you can learn from my mistake(s), but in the end I'll have a sweet fastback for < $10k or up to say $20k if I want to go all the way and do the Eleanor thing with a nicer paint job.

For the time being, I'll just say that you can buy every piece you need to do this. The only part I've not been able to find is a whole rear seat. EVERY other piece is available. As to the roof being about $2k or so Andrew, you might want to check around. Mustangs Unlimited has them for $274.95 and California Mustang has them for a little more than that I believe. Glass and all other trim are also available.

As to the cost, I keep hearing that it's cheaper to buy a fastback. I beg to differ. By the time I finish the conversion to fastback this coupe, which started with good rails, torque boxes etc, will have cost me less than $10,000 total and all the fastback sheet metal will be new. Good luck finding a FB that will be in that good of shape for $12k or less. Just check on craigs list or e-bay to see if you can. Oh...and if you do find one in new condition for that much...do let me know so I can buy it.

OK, OK, settle down. If you want to hack up a perfectly good coupe which I personally think has more appeal than a fastback go ahead. You don't need our permission. It's your choice, so deal with it. But, I question your estimation of cost.
