Imo, torque is more important than horsepower. If I prefered it the other way, I would'vr bought a Honda v.v

I am not going to get a 351 block in there. It's too much trouble.

So are you guys telling me that I'll need to get an upgraded block, even if I have 'bulletproof' internals?

I am stroking the 302 so that I will get the same horsepower as a 302 but with less strain.

your supposed to get 450 (at the crank) from a stock block safely....... your also supposed to get 450 from a stock crank, but i proved that theory wrong.

now if i had drove easier on the motor im sure it would have held up alot longer, and with a stroker you'll be keeping your revs in a respectable range i would hope.

i believe my crank was the weak link, so if you going with an aftermarket (stronger) crank you should be ok with the block - just dont beat the snot out of it.

I won't be at w.o.t. all day every day if that's what you're saying. Mabe I should just stick around 400 hp to be safe . . .

Do you guys think it would be extreme overkill to go with H-beams? I do want extreme reliability, but will it really be worth it? I would be willing to pay a few hundred bucks more . .

good i beams and a cast steel crank should be PLENTY for a balanced 331 or 347 sticking at or under 6k rpm's

IMO fullauto has a hellofa deal for a 347 kit for 800 bucks shipping included. if i had the cash i'd jump on it for myself.

cast crank, cast i beam rods, and probe forged pistons with moly rings and clevite 77 bearings....
add a balance job from local machine shop your at a grand, not too shabby at all

I just can't get past the bad things I've heard about the 347's...

The oil consumption and bad connecting rod ratio. Everyone says that the problems have all been solved, but I haven't seen proof.

I am willing to spend the extra money on good, durable parts. But I d not want to rebuild my engine every few years.

I thought $800 for a rotating assembly was alful cheap but since its not balanced that makes since. we sell balanced assemblies for just under $900. A stock block is good to 500hp by the way. To get the most revs out of what ever you get make it internal balanced. A friend of mine at work is in the process of building a 460 from a winsor dart block with yates head and a few other goodies I'm not sure the power its going to put out but he building it to rev over 8K. I will let you know how it tures out it in assembly now so it shouldn't be to long. as someone said earilier this is where I work. http://tandlengines.com/

1.I will use gapless rings, regardless
2.Airconditioning? lmao
3.I'm only 18, won't be allowed into bars for a while

Regardless of all that, I will be getting (at most) a 331 anyways.

Can I get 400 reliable N/A horsepower out of a 302 with a compression ration at or lower than 10:1?This is my new 'thesis'

If the above is possible, please prove with parts list.

"...the 347’s wrist pin is located way up into the oil-ring lands. This allows the use of a long, 5.400-inch rod for improved rod-length-to-stroke ratio. The positioning does cause some oil use, a non-critical factor on a racing engine. But on Coast’s Street Fighter 347, a shorter 5.315-inch rod is used, so the 347 displacement is achieved without the wrist pin going into the piston’s oil-ring area, a better situation for a street engine."

Unless you drive like my77 all the time, i dont think its gunna make a lot of difference with 331 v 347 only the 347 has more streetable torque, which is what you say you are after.

Have you considered what gearing you want to use. I reckon you could build a strong, reliable 300rwhp 302, add 3.70 or 4.11 rearand it would feel like (and perform like) a 400hp engine with 3.20 gears. As long as everything is well balanced, there should be no issue with reliability and you'd save a lot of money for other useful things like brakes and suspension!

My 302 is nowhere near 400hp but with 3.50's its fun to drive and pulls like a school boy from low revs to about 5500. I'm breaking the speed limit in second gear anyway and jailable at the top of 3rd. The additional torque from either stroker kit with or without extra horses would add nicely to my tyre bill.

Hey, dont get me wrong...i'd love 400rwhp. I dont have the spare cash and can live with what i have for now but if i were you, I'd talk to any of the guys here who build motors for a living and discuss with them what you want out of the whole car and what other mods you are going to make along the way to handle more grunt than the average stang.

good luck with the new thesis! there are endless ways to skin this cat

I know you're trying to help, but I doubt I'll change my mind on the 347. As much as I would love the added performance, I need to sacrifice for reliablility. I would need to see a 347 with 50,000 miles before my mind is changed.

In the mean time, since I haven't heard a lick of badnews about the 331, I will stick with that.Possibily even a built 302. Look at what you've made me do, lowering my standards and all . .
