Points vs Electric distributor
Currently I'm running a Mallory pos electronic system that was in the car when I bought it. Converting it to a Procomp HEI unit when time permits. I'm not real big on the old dizzies because you have to swap points too much due to wear. We'll see how the HEI setup works.

A 'baggie' with a new set ofpoints in the glove box maybe a little to much for some, but I carryspare fan belts, lug nuts, a first aid kitand a resistor jumper wire in all my cars tool boxes. The only items that I've not used on my or any other cars in distress are the fan belts. When I go up into the Sierras, I carry even more 'stuff', just in case I get 'flodded' or waylaid by bandits or Chevy drivers. It's something I learned from my father.

I hate points. I think there the reason my car is running like crap. I converted back to points to fix my "problem" It's been running real rough and jerking while driving. Im going to put my pertronix back in, and hope it still works. I still have my plugs gapped to .45 which is probabbly the problem with the car.
Pertronix's is the way to go. After I put mine in a few years ago. The car ran and idled better, no maintenance and the engine is stillhappy. Now if I could get my p/s pumps problem solved I'll be happy.

I carry a spare fuel pump and belts in my trunk, along with a tool box and my points are in the tool box. I have never had to use the fuel pump or the belts, but it's there for ensurance.
When I take my Jeep to the rocks I have spare axles, driveshafts, hubs, u-joints, fluids, belts, hoses, welder, etc., because if it breaks I've got to fix it to get home. I'm already dirty from the trail and dressed appropriately so it isn't a big deal to get in there in and fix it. With my street cars, I'll go as far as changing a tire, but beyond that, I'll get it towed or go home and get parts, tools and a change of clothes before I'll start climbing under it on the side of the road in my street clothes.
Now, if you're going to take a road trip and be out in the middle of nowhere, that may be another story. I'm a city guy...
To the original poster, the only pro to the points is that it is original equipment and presumably you already have it. Aside from the cost, the electronic is superior in every way as far as I'm concerned. Whether you go the Pertronix, HEI, Mallory, Duraspark, MSD or the like, is up to you.
