Default junkyard 302 block

hey guys this summer im going to be doing a complete motor build project hopefully (my first!!) so i can learn how to do all the mechanical stuff i have to pay people to do! im going to be using a 302 block but im not sure wehre to get one!! in jegs catalogues and stuff they are over 2g!! i was hoping i could go to a junkyard and find one for alot cheaper but not cracked or anything. the motor would probably end up going into a fox body. when i go to a junkyard to look at motors how will i know which ones are 302 blocks!?! i know it sounds like a stupid question but i dont think i would be able to tell the dif from other small block motors! thanks for any help or tips yall can give!! im really pumped, as u can tell from the 9000 !!s.[8D]

casting numbers are your friend. so are the little stickers under the hood that say what size the engine is.

early blocks are supposed to be stronger, but you'd be better served with a late model block due to the roller lifters and one piece rear main seal setup.

hell, if you can ****** the brackets off the front for the serpantine setup, thats even better. a decent junk yard you should be able to grab one for a couple hundred bucks complete....... and if your going to use stock heads look for something outta a mid 90's explorer or newer, they have gt-40 or gt-40P heads already

Wait for My77 to get his Mexican blocks and then buy them off of him. Are you going to go through with that Shane?

as an engine builder i can give you some pieces of advice, you pay for quality parts, you get quality, ford early 302 connecting rods are beasts when shot peened and heat treated, there are many ford swap meets during the summer you can pick up great cheap forged 302 crankshafts there do it but make sure it is an early crank with 2 piece rear main and 28 oz external balance i say this because i would rather have a stronger block with a 2 piece rear main than a 5.0 roller block and be and be able machine for a roller cam if desired because if properly done a 2 piece rear main will give you no problems!!!, with todays pistons make sure your cylinder walls and main journals are baby butt smooth no rough cross hatch but a good line hone for the mains and an automatichone for cylinders you will get a better seal, make sure the machine shop uses a head plate and countersinks the cylinder bores it will be much easier to install the pistons, speed pro pistons forged flattops and rings438 a set from summit, clevite bearings p-series, main stud girdle is a must...also never buy pre assembled heads, build your valve train component by component and make sure they match, Ie comp or crane, cam pushrods and rockers and guide plates, ferrea valves and valve springs, and cloyes timing chain...moroso or canton oil pan, road race oil pans make great street pans and an oil cooler is almost a must...get someone who knows how to degree a camshaft and check valve to piston clearences the right way, it is worth the time and money...also get your crankshaft balanced, and use a good ati 28 oz balancer in front and a good hays 157 tooth flywheel out back...good luck with the build

When i first bought the car some punks were tryin to steal the intake manifold and they left every single bolt loose on the manifold when i drove off down the road you can imagine what a burnt engine smells like only took me like 15 minutes and it fried.
Also its been sitting outside cuz there is no room in the shed.
