Friend of mine has a 65 289 2 barrel.Everything has been running fine and then the other day at above 40 it gets power surges and rpms jump all over the place and also when he would stop the rpms would jump to 1500 and then 0 and then back up.Now car keeps dying and hes heard a loud boom sound and then car died. What are your guys' thoughts?thanks in avance Timing is at 8 advance.have checked all the usual stuff.

Sounds liek a fuel delivery problem. When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced? Do you have access to a fuel pressure guage? Maybe an incar type so you can see what its doing while youre driving. It sounds like youre getting drops in fuel pressure. Its either that or the metering circuit of the carb is gumming up.

My 68 302 2v timing is 6 BTC. I can check my manual when I get home to see what his engine should be set at if noone from here knows what it should be off the top of their heads. (But I bet you you have your answer way before I get home at 4:40. There is also a section for trouble shooting those problems in the back of the book. I will look it up too.

Anywhere between 6-8 BTC should be OK for your timing.

Have you checked for an air leak around the carb?

How many miles on the engine? Is it possible that the timing slipped?

I am going to have to go with the same train of thought as Troy. Get yourself a can of carb cleaner and spray around the intake manifold and under the carbwhile she is idling. If she smooths out, the you have a vacuum leak and the gaskets need to be changed.

SOMETIMES, a car will behave like that if the points are bad or gapped wrong. I agree that it is most likely a vacuum leak, but look at the points next if that doesn't fix it.

If the RPM ups and downs were on the tach it could be ignition. My module went out on the Unilite and did exactly the same way you described including the backfires.

I wouldn't use carb cleaner for the checking, My rebuild kit on my carb said that it damages gaskets, I think they mean on the accelrator pump and stuff (the rubber ones) JustI would be carefully and use the start spray stuff.
