Hipo 289 HELP
Hey i have a 1966 coupe with a 289 hipo in it. Im crazy about cars but dont no much about them engine wise. I've been rebuilding it for some time and now its time for the hipo 289 upgrade. What i need is a good amount of chrome, but my main concern is what can i do to add power within a resonable price range..such as a bigger cam? and if so what other ajustments would i have to take to fit those parts..When i say resonable i mean the whole engine around 1500 to be done if possible.
Pick up some used parts. I would go with edelbrock performer heads, performer rpm intake and 600 cfm thunder series. If you can get at least some of that used, you will stay within budget and have enough left over for a cam. What are you looking for in idle quality and power band range? Do you have a manual or auto and if auto, is it a stock tranny and torque convertor? you might consider going rpm heads too and installing a 2000-2500 rpm stall torque convertor. You have asked a very general question so I am going to give a vague answer until you clear up some stuff about what you are looking for (not just "hipo").
oh yea, you may wish to at least replace the rings and possibly rebuild the motor while you are at it, so try to allow for that in your budget.

Thats what i was looking for just some names so i could look them up really. Im not sure what half of that is but im learning. The previous ownerhad my stang set up for racing with huge slicks on the back and skinny tires on front. Its and auto but has a B&M slap shift in it. As far as the engine i think its mostly original.
Are you positive it is a K code engine? If it is, then pull that engine and store it or sell it to a person looking to restore an original K code car. Get yourself a 302 and build away. Please don't destroy a K code engine.
It is more likely that it is a 289 with a cheapy "289 hipo" air cleaner on it. I would have given the same advise if I thought there was even a remote possibility of it being a true k code motor. He probably wouldn't be quite as unhappy with the power if it was a k code and not just a c code.
if you wanna stay under 1500 bucks i recommend the following......
ford GT-40 heads, they were used on mid 90's explorers and can be found in the junk yards pretty cheap or even on ebay for a few hundred bucks. there are also GT-40P's which were used in late 90's explorers but they have a different spark plug angle wont work with alot of headers. in my opinion its not worth the small gain in HP for the large gain in headaches.
summitracing.com is having a sale on their cams right now, you can pick up a cam & lifter set for less than 70.00 - the 218/228 .471/.471 cam would be an excellent choice for street driving and will still make alot of power.
as stated before, a edelbrock performer rpm intake and a 600cfm 4 barrel carb. i prefer a holley design but to each his own, an edelbrock would serve the purpose for a street car just as well i suppose. i would suggest getting a new carb so your not dealing with a gunked up mess or a poor rebuild, and they are only a tad over 200 bucks new. the intake is something you can definately find on ebay used for cheap - if its dirty, just have it glassbeaded (sandblasted) at your local machine shop (should be cheap to have done)
i calculate everything listed at approx. 800.00 which leaves 700 for pistons, rings, bearings, gasket set, machine work.
further calculations based off some decent flattop pistons, moly rings, clevite 77 bearings, and a gasket set leaves you with approx 400 or 450 for machine work which should be able to be done easily.
dont forget upgraded rod bolts and a heavy duty oil pump driveshaft.... both cheap insurance items. also a high volume oil pump is ok, but a high pressure oil pump is better (i think the melling # is H-68A)
all this is probably way over you head LOL but i had fun typing it

How could i tell for sure if it is a K code. and i am pretty happy with the power it has...i just thought since i was going to be rebuilding it i could throw in some extras..the guy i bought it from had it set up for drag racing with big tubd fenders and huge racing slicks on it
