As much as it is templing, don't use water or high pressure water to clean out the cowl area, you will wind up with water inside your car, not from leaks but from a high volumn of 'wet'. Use compressed air.

Duh ... Water , indeed will get inside the car! Shame on me for assuming this was a work in progress . If in fact your steed is intact , disregard the idea of spraying water into your passenger compartment. It's really not a good idea. LOL.

fun story of my messed up cowl/vents

so i took my baby to a "do it yourself" wash and cleaned her all pretty. well i have a cowl cover that doesn't really work anymore (by the way, does anyone make the magetic covers anymore?) well I leave the place and start driving. Both the vent on passenger and driver are open because it's a hot day. Just for kicks and giggles I floor her for a litte romp. The second I do water and soap come flying up from the vents all into the interior of my car. I wish their was a video becasue the inside of my car looked so funny like a soap bomb went off.

needless to say i pulled over and had to wipe everything down

I know this probably always comes up when newbies join but, who has repaired the underside of the cowl themselves, and how much of a pain in the a** was it? I saw some pics on CJPony Parts andI guess the only problem is making sure your windshield will still fit right when you are done?
Iam in the process onmine so let me see if I remember all the steps so far:
1 Remove windshield.
2 Removed fenders.
3 Drill out three hundred "PLUS" spot welds.
4 Remove cowl cover.
5 Fabricate patch panels for rusted out parts on cowl cover (Did I mention the three hundred "PLUS" spot welds?
6Cut out rusted cowls and weld in new ones.
7 Make patch panels for areas that new cowls do not cover.
8Por 15 the hell out of everything.

I still need to wled the cowl cover back on, but I am going to wait til I get my mig welder. To this point I have been using Oxy, but I want to weld the cover back on with the mig.

Thanks Grim. This is what I thought it consisted of, I just heard you had to be careful putting the cowl back on so it will not affect your windshield reinstall. It looked like there was about 300 spot welds on that thing!

Na, about 170. A punch and a spot weld cutter will do he job. Less than 2 hours of drilling. Use a "whiz wheel"to cut around the brassed inspots below the A post. Makes life a little easier when you re-assemble. You will need about 20+ sets of vise grips. Careful not to overheat when you start welding it back together. Have fun!

Speaking of replacing the cowl panels, has anyone thought abut powder coating the panels before they go back in? Seem that would keep them from rusting out again. Just a thought.
