Yeah, please do. Take lots of pics and write up a how-to. Most likely it will be very similar to adding one to a C4.

The C4 is generally considered to be stronger than an AOD. Last year I replaced my C4 with an AOD, and the overdrive gear is great. With 3.25 gears, 70 mph is at 2000 rpm. Highway mileage went from 19 to 25 mpg. The cable from the carb to the AOD sucks, the shifter linkage is a solveable problem, and your exhaust head pipe will need to be custom built, to name a few issues. Plus, it will cost more to have an AOD worked on than a C4. All depends on what you want. Simple, tough, and 3 speeds compared to somewhat complex, possible iffy reliability, and an extra gear. The AOD weighs noticeably more, at least when you go to pick one up.

I too was considering an AOD, verses rebuilding my C4. In the end, I had the C4 completely gone through for a fraction of thecost to build and installasimilarAOD. The race shop that built my C4:
rigid bands, H/D clutches, C-servo, pump mods, modified valvebody, etc. He wasadamant that the best, and strongest setup was a C4 backed by a gear vendor overdrive. My C4 cost right at $900 to build, I bought the parts and pulled the tranny, and he supplied thelabor. I'm confident it'll handle anything I can throw at it. I believe the gear vendor units are advertised as 600 hp, but ain't cheap. Just my 2 cents.

Well given I am a poor college student and buying and beefing up an AOD is probably out of the question right now.
Friend wrecked his 89 Merc that had an AOD and I was tossing the idea around of buying it from him.
With other things giving me problems like my broken motor mounts, and Ignition timing/advance curve, (motor mounts broke while trying to fix the timing problem) I wont have the time or the money to do a trany for awhile (my "fun money" fund is low, maybe I should budget more money there ), at least until it gives me some serious problems. either way its nice to have this info...

So what is the weight difference between an AOD and a C4?

In comparison how much more power would you loose by changing over to an AOD?

If you get the AOD from your buddy, be absolutely sure you get everything with it, all brackets, cables, hardware, starter adapter plate between the motor and tranny, etc, etc. Then, put together several hundred$'s for the new cross member, drive line re-work, shifter cable, etc.

What they don't tell you, is what usually costs you the most.

I have both a C-4 and an AOD. I put the C-4 in my ranger that has a 302 in it. The C-4 lasted literally about 20 miles before all the clutches let loose and left what looked like dirt in the pan. So then I got an AOD from a friend (for free), threw it in the truck. Ive had it in there for almost 2 years and havent had any problems with the trans. Had to adjust the TV cable (throttle valve cable), but it shifts good and strong. I did also detune the motor ( back to stock) so the trans would hold up. The truck has 3.73's in it so I definitly NEEDED to have OD, otherwise at 70 Id be spinning some crazy rpm's.
