This is completely confused me. To me 4v used to stand for 2 inlet and 2 outlet valves on the car hence a 4 cylinder in 16 valves. Having discovered the world of carbs 4v means 4 venturi's now 3v to me mean 1 inlet and two exhaust hence 12v as used by some VW 4 cylinders. So standard push rods should be 2 valve per cylinder 3v is possible as restrict exhaust is a problem on normal exhaust manifolds but 3 valves is not normal on us car engines. When atom talks about 4v being bigger he means bigger flow properties of a 2 valve head to accommodate the higher amount of fuel and air from a 4 venturi carb. I hope this helps!!
the 4v is a reference to the carb not the head itself althougth the valves were bigger tocompenssate for the bigger carb. the 2v heads had a 2 barrel carb and smaller valvesto compensate for the smaller carb. the 3v is a marketing tool to see show the compromise of the 2 and 4v heads.
