Then keep it original. Just replace original parts with new original parts. There were about a million 1965 Mustangs produced in 1964-65, and they were all street worthy back then. The same holds true today.

Driver it is!
The more I think about it the more I want to drive it, a lot.
So I will pull the engine and trans, and prep them both for rebuild.
While they are out I will swap the front brakes and rebuild the back.

I have a 1967 coupe.
It does NOT have power brakes, is adding power brakes an option, or even necessary?
It HAS factory power steering, and a nice puddle of fluid to go with it, is this system still serviceable? Is there other options (like the disk swap) there are a better way to go than the factory power?
When replacing the Gas tank, do I want a drain plug or not. Those of you who have a drain plug, do you use it often?

from what i know, they all leak power steering fluid. Try and find out where it is coming from. I think you will find it coming from the power steering piston under the car. I believe they make a rebuild kit for this, but it may be easier just to buy the whole thing. Mine leaks as well, it is on my to-do list.

I have a drain plug and I have owned my 65 for 12 years now. During those 12 years I have drained my tank twice. One time was to get the old gas out, and the other time was to change out the sending unit. It's handy when you need it, so if the cost of the tank is about the same with a drain plug, then get one. The power brakes are not necessary, and yes the power steering can be serviced.

ORIGINAL: Soaring

they were all street worthy back then. The same holds true today.
They were road worthy in a time when being decapitated by the steering column was more common than the use of a child seat. At a time before everyone made cars that could do 0-60 under 5 seconds and stop almost as fast. (even Cadillac and Jeeps have cars that can do that today, let alone all the sports cars out there that are even faster). This was when “airbags†were people who talked to much, and “anti-lock†had to do with not locking your keys in the car. Back when the general population of the US was about half what it is now and traffic wasn’t nearly as congested.

So if everything is stock with no upgrades, then go ahead and put it on the road. After all, they are meant to be driven. But be selective of when and where you drive it.

Soaring, I’m sure you know all this, but I want to point it out here because I don’t want some 15-18yr old kid to use anything here to convince his parents everything’s perfectly safe with getting an old stang for their first car, and then end up seriously hurt.

IMO, if you are planning on taking your 67 out for nice drives in the mountains as well as regualr street driving, I would get power disc brakes without question. I only drive my car on the weekends about 3 times a month if that, and the big reason for that is that I do not have Disc brakes, let alone power brakes. When I complete the disc brake swap, I will be able to take my 67 to work once a week if I feel like it, without any worry of not being able to stop.
The brakes and steering are the most important things for our cars if you want to make them reliable and safe daily drivers. It may blow your budget, but I would recommend upgrading to a power rack and pinion setup (bolt in sold by various companies) and doing a power disc or manual disc upgrade while your engine and trans are out. It will be much easier to do then if you decide after the engine is back in. Check all yoru suspension components as well and replace all worn bushings/re-grease as necassary.
Good luck to you and post pics when you get a chance.

I know your statement was directed toward Soaring, but I do agree with you.
Street worthy yes, but not to todays standards, without saying.
I have a 15 and 17 year old, and all I hear is what color racing stripes they want me to put on it.
I want to make this car safer to drive.
My kids will end up driving this car one day, and I am not about to put them in something that isnt as safe as it can be.
For me this means disk brakes, new gas tank, sheet metal on the trunkside of the back seat, Monti carlo bar setup, colapsable steering column, and 3 point belts.
The steering column and belts have yet to be investigated.
I dont like the look of the belt hanging fron the roof, so I am thinking of a high back seat that will put the belt in the right location. there seems to be alot more meat in the floor of the car for mounting also.

the 67 came with optional 3 points so the fixing point should be there i believe, and take into account an accident with the stang will be worse than the same crash in a moden car in general.

This way doesnt look too bad (on a 70, not a 67)

http://www.julianos.com/how2_3pt_mustang_custom.html

But it looks much like the way the belts are mounted in my 01 GT.
