Default New Antenna

I have a 66 mustang coupe and wantto install an antenna but the fender doesn't have a mounting hole. The new antenna I just purchased didn't provide a template either. Any help on where to locate, as well as tips for drilling the hole, would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

I can take some measurements for you tomorrow to help you locate where to drill and what size hole. there is also a small cutout for the tab on the antenna to fit in. i will also take a pic for you. Its just to late and dark outside to do it now.

Mike, thanks for your response. I'm looking forward to your picture and thoughts about drilling the hole.

On drilling the hole, use a small drill bit to make your first hole, then measure the bottom of the antenne to see what drill bit you will need for the final hole. Here are some measurement shots and how it fits on my 65. It doesn't have to be exact. Ignore the 2nd shot. My camera is trigger happy.

You're going to want to use a hole saw on that sheet metal.

I believe it's a 1 1/8 inch dia hole. There is a notch about 3/16 X 3/16 toward the outside of the car to keep the antenna from twisting. A hole saw is recomended as gothand says, but a 1 1/8 dia is an odd size (1 or 1 1/4 are more or less standard). Start small, a 1 inch dia, and work carefully as in masking tape the area. Wait untill you get to routing the antenna cable. I recomend a coat hanger, some string, some patients, some beer and limit the words of abject dissapointment.

I just found half the installation instructions on how to install the antenna, the instruction sheet. I'll look for the template sheetlater when I got time. The hole saw is1 1/8 inch dia. First you must drill two 1/8 pilot holes, one for the antenna and one for the alignment hole. Then drill the alignment hole to 3/8 inch. Then drill the antenna hole to 1/4 inch for the hole saw centering. It must be done in that order. The critical dimention is the distance between the two pilot holes. Naturally it is not shown on the instruction sheet.

Thanks for the follow-up. I'll wait to see if you can come up with the template. I got the turn signal switch swopped out and the emergency flasher installed. I'll tackle the antenna tomorrow.

Thanks,
Bill
