Default shock tower repairs help needed!!!

added new wider tires to front..now tire rubs when backing up and turning left...does not do this driving forward..i noticed that the shock tower is showing a gap on the front edge of the plate on the inside of engine bay...i read somewhere about the procedure to push the a-arm back in the proper position and weld the area, but can not find it in the archives.. anyone know how to "properly" push the area back in position to weld? please help me...wife gets cranky when she can't drive her car!!!

My car has had both its towers rebuilt. One by a welding shop, the next by a body man who had made templates since he's done this repair several times. If you don't get the towers done right, you won't be able to align the front end properly, so maybe seek out a bodyshop that's familiar with it.

Rubs in reverse but not in forward, is there a clunking noise just before you start moving? I ask because I had an alignment shop NOT tighten one of my upper control arm mounting bolts one time. The Shims on the forward bolt fell into the cuped area under the arm, top of the frame rail. Everytime I went into reverse the I heard the clunking noise, and the upper arm moved forward changing my caster. Then when going forward, the arm moved back until the nut caught on the shock tower in the engine compartment side. It comes to mind because you say it rubs in reverse but not in forward. Sounds like there is some play somewhere.

Since my towers are right where they should be, I will go out this afternoon and take some measurements so you will know where to put yours. In the meantime, here is a kit that you can buy and weld these pieces to your tower for strength. Just a thought.

Get a Ford Service Manual for your car, it looks like a 65 or 66. There is a section on frame alignment with dimensions. I've seen in NPD, the entire engine compartment sides, from firewall to radiator support, for sale, about $530. That may be a more practical solution for your problem. Remember, the VIN number goes away withthat new sheet metal.
