Default tech question

This question came from my Mom's boyfriend:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
[/align] Sat. I shifted out of low at 4000 then the engine started popping through the carb. It does that while under load, but cruising up the street at 25-30 mph in high, it was smooth. any ideas?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the car (67 cougar) is starving for gas (secondaries). What do you all think?

Spark plug firing while intake valve is still open.

Worn out valve springs that can't close fast enough anymore - maybe
Worn out valve that doesn't seat all the way - maybe
Too far advance timing causing the plug to fire before the valve is closed - common
Poorly adjusted/loose rocker arm - my bet

It wouldn't be firing if it was starving for gas. Sounds like he needs a valve job.
