Original Plus - a new category
It's just a matter of a week - or two - that my car will be fully restored.8 months or work,8 months of daily visits,8 months of money poured into the project.
We have turned our attention to almost every detail of the black/black fastback. After hundreds and hundredsof decisions, the final issueis the wheels/tires.
I am firm on keeping he dualred line tires as they are original and specific to the 65/66Mustang. Also, the steel style wheels will stay - again because they offer a distinctive visual cue for the 65/66 stangs.
Here's my question. Would you be inclined to up-size tp14x7 wheels even though I would have to give up the "year-correct" trim rings. To my eye, the 14X5 look very skinny. But I'm not sure about the trade off - going with a non-original wheel to gain a wider footprint. One other thing to consider is that 14x7 or 15X7 will require some modifactions to the car as the front left wheel will scrape.
Or would you just stay with the 14X5 skinny legs. Afterall, this is waht the car was designed for.
By the way, does anyone know what the original Shelly wheel and tires szie was used in their 65/66?
When the car is done I will post some pictures. So far it looks like things have worked out nicely. The end result should be jaw dropping.
I have been extremely careful to keep the original spirit of the car in tact. The outside looks totally stock. And the inside looks almost original. I have only improved uponsaftey and perfomance features. So, despite the addition of Recaro seats, Borla exhaust, Paxtron Superharger, dual reserve brakes, radial tires, 3 pontseat belts, LED tail lightsetc, I do not consider my car to be a restomod.
I hereby suggest a new category... "Original Plus".
To me this means showroom new - only better. Make sense to you guys?

No. But to answer your question, on my 66 hardtop daily driver, I got a set of 67 styled steel wheels. They are wider but you can't tell. I have radials on it and that car handles better than my 66 K with the repro stock dual red lines and original styled steel wheels. Less tire squeal too.

I don't know if the 7" will rub. I decided that I will go with 15x8's wrapped in 225/60/15 Supposedly they will even fit a 1" drop with no problem. I looked at every sizing chart and have talked to a few people. Before I spend 800 dollars on wheels, can anyone tell me otherwise on these wheels/tires fitting??
Edit:4.5" backspacing

+1 Connor, but are the redwalls any good as tyres?
I have 14x6 styled steel - 215/65/14. No issues
I dont think youd have any trouble fitting a 225/60/15 as long as you have more than 4" backspacing. My TTd's are 225/60/15 and they dont rub on the back and only just on the front, but thats because they have 3.75 bs and they are at least an inch taller.
350k you dont need 8" to fit the 225's so in your case you might wanna consider 235 or 245 on that rim for the rear, 225 for the front on a 7??? In either case, i would consider 50 or 55 profile.

I kind of wanted to stay away from different wheels sizes front to rear. But if I had... 15 x7's 225/60/15 front 15x8's 245/60/15 in the rear...
1.Would that clear 100% with a 1" drop and...
2.Would 2 different tire sizes give me a strange geometry when corning?

1) not 100% sure...with 4.125 bs 225/60/15 on a 7" rimshould fit the front. Where I am not sure is if you want to increase the caster (pull the wheels toward the front of the car) which improves your turn-in. My TTD's hit the fender at the front and top. I had to back off the caster which increases understeer and they still just rub on the top of the fender. I can fix it with rolling the fender which i dont want to do or 50 profile or change rims. Right now I am spending cash on another car so the TTD's sit in the corner of the shed
2) no issue cornering...look at all the old race cars. Big tyres on teh back for traction (and the reason they built such fat rear guards)Skinnier on the front cos thats all they had room for.
I agree better to stay with one size rim and tyre for ease of rotation and longer tyre life. 225 on an 8" rim will be marginally wider than on a 7. So I'd go with the 7's, min 4.125 b/s and the 225 in 50 or 60 profile should do the trick!
