Default Speedometer Help

I installed a mini tach in the dash of my 67 vert this weekend. While I was removing the instrument cluster, there was hardly any slack on the speedometer cable I pulled the metal compression fitting off the black rubber insulator. This pulled the cable out about one inch. I tried to push the cable back in but it was in a bind. I removed the cable from the trans and tried to spin the cable from the bottom and then push it from the top. It finally went back in and I was able to get the fitting back on the insulator as well. I thought all was well. However now that I have everything back together the speedometer jumps until about 30MPH and the needle is steady. What did I do? [:@]More importantly, how do I fix it? Is it possible to over tighten the fitting on the trans or on the speedometer? Will I have to replace the whole speedometer cable? Please Help!
