I smell like gas :(
Bought my 68 289 yesterday. As I mentioned in a few posts, it's likely the carb needs to be adjusted or replaced. This according to the guy I bought it from. It does start okay (you have to turn the key a bit too long for my liking and tap on the gas) and does run okay but...
You can really 'smell' the car when its running or your outside. When I came in I noticed I brought the smell into my house via my clothes.
Question: Is that because of the bad carb (or maybe something else?) or is that just a fact of life of these mustangs. If so, I think I'll have to let it go

If the carb is leaking, you will usually have a puddle of gas on the intake, and usually on the firewall side. In that case, the carb needs new gaskets so you need to overhaul it. Check for other areas. Check around the fuel line where it goes into the fuel pump, fuel filter and into the carb. Open your trunk and see if the smell is in there. If so, you either have pin holes in the top of your tank, or the rubber hose that connects the filler tube to the tank has rotted.
You shouldn't smell like gas, after reading your carb post. I think the PO had a good carb on there, and when he went to sell it he put on the original. I would get the carb rebuilt or buy a new one and save the old carb.
Not sure what size the carb is, but it's a 'c' class per mustangdecoder:

I don't know what type it is, I'd imagine it's stock, does the "C" code from the VIN info suggest that it would be the lower end on? (2 barrel?) I plan on finding a local mustang place to bring it to so I'd assume between them and the web I'd have access to any carb
I'd like to replace with sock unless there is a better one (looking for good ride, mileage, daily driver, don't want to smell like gas
etc. more than speed)

If you have a holley, adjust the two side screws in all the way then loosen then 1/4 turn. If too much then 1/8 turn. If the carb is not adjusted right then you will smell gas and it can get into your clothes. My 69 was adjusted for drag racing...way too much gas IMO. Had to readjust it. Look at the exhaust too. If it is too rich then there will be evidence there.
Is the car running right or is it a little rough? Could very well be a bad carb. If it is a little rough, you might check you vacuum hoses. That bites me all the time.
If it's a stock carburetor, then it is a Motorcraft 2100 2 barrel. You can either get a kit and rebuild it yourself, or take that carb to the store and trade it for a rebuilt one. Me, I would rebuild the original.
