Upholstery installation
I am trying to re-upholster my seats from a 66 stang and I am in the process of pulling the old coverings and foam off. Does anyone know if I need to keep the burlap on with the metal reinforcement or whould I take it off. Also If I take the burlap off should I be putting new burlap on and does it need the metal reinforcement. THANKS
Those little pieces of 'brown droppings' under your seats would be the first indication that the burlap needs to be scrapped and new burlap installed. After you do this, no more 'brown droppings'. The wires are not necessary and in any case, I've not been able to find a suitable replacement. Just lay some new over the frame, tuck it in at the 'coat hanger' size wire and use about 8 to 10 hog rings on all foursides to hold it down. Same with the back.

Replace the burlap. It keeps the foam from squeezing through the seat springs. I found 'hook latch rug backing' at JoAnn's Fabrics. This is very stiff and has small square holes. Hog ring it to the springs and then attach the buns.
We replaced the horses and cattle about 15 years ago with Intel and Sun Microsystems. I get my material from one of the myriad of upholstery shops around here. If you ask nicely, they will sell you what you need: burlap, felt, hog rings; and give some installation tips.

You can even use an old towel to go on there instead of a burlap sheet. Anything that will keep the foam from punching through. That's what I used, and 12 years later she still looks and sits good.
