Default rear end woes

So Ive been putting together a 9 inch with 350 traction lock.I bought thehousing ,that came with axles and a driveshaft, for $100.Had it sandblasted, new spring perches welded on.Painted it POR15 black.Turned out really nice.Bought a pumpkin with350 gears and traction lock,$450.It was a 31 spline unit so my axles became useless,28 spline. Its been sitting in the garage for a year now waiting on new axles.
I started looking at the info given in earlier posts tonight and realised the housing was for a 71 mustang and that makes it 2 inches wider than what I need for my 70.Not what I want.
Now its back to the drawing board.Im gonna sell the housing and axles for sure. The pumpkin is where Im not sure what to do.Should I sell all of it and just get better gears for my 8 inch,or try to find another housing the right size and get the 400 dollar axles from the speed shop?

Not exactly sure what you are saying but here's what I know. The 31 spline axles were typically used on trucks and are a bit wider than the 28 spline. However, you should be able to get a 31 spline axle the same width as a 28. If you have a 9" axle, then the 9" third member should fit. The axle you have got may have been from a truck thus the wider stance. You can get the third members already built and ready to install with whatever gear setup you wish. Price all depends on the carrier (trac-lock, detroit, etc.). If the axle does not fit then your best bet would be to sell the whole thing and start over. Sounds terrible but it is the easiest. I am guessing you have an 8"??? You can get a third member for it that is almost as strong as a 9". Both are great axles by the way.

Guys correct me if I am wong, but the extra 2" shouldn't be a problem. If you are concerned about the wheel fitment, just go with a bigger offset. As long as the perches are in the right place it should be ok.

+100 , Two inches too narrow would be a real problem, two inches too wide can be handled, it is only 1 inch on each side!!!

Two words,,,, Offset wheels!
