Both the pilot bearing and the throwout bearing are usually pre-lubed, depending on the brand you get. The Ford Racing pilot bearing instructions specifically state not to add any additional lubricant to the pre-lubricated bearing so as to not to have it run out into your clutch disc. I've had a throwout bearing or two that did have a grease fitting which I just used some wheel bearing grease I believe.

Re-reading your post, you do have a new pilot bearing and throwout bearing, don't you? Considering how easy and affordable they are to replace now, I'd do it. To get the old pilot bearing out you'll either need a puller or they sell a special fitting which you attach a grease gun to that will force it out. Last but not least, make certain to properly clean all the mating surfaces and line up the disc with the alignment tool. Having longer bolts with the heads cut-off, threaded into the bellhousing will make your life a lot easier as well.

Good luck!

Consider picking up a roller pilot bearing in lieu of the standard oiled bronze. They're not that expensive.

Yeah, roller pilot bearings are the best way to go.

Well, I was planning on re-using my pilot bearing and throw out bearing but sounds like I shouldn't

All the existing components are already out, pilot bearing came out without any tool, just pulled it! I will be going to mustang unlimited tomorrow morning to pick up my new clutch assembly ... here again any recommendations? I have a stock 289 and I will not be doing anything fancy with it

Thanks

It you're running a factory 289 and a factory 4sp with all original equipment...then I'd skip Mustangs Unlimited and go to one of the reputable local auto parts dealers like NAPA and get a new clutch. It will have as good a warranty, be the same brand name, and be cheaper than MU.
