Default Transmission Installation.. Tips?

Well as mentioned on another posting this afternoon I worked on putting back in my toploader ... let me start by saying I am doing that in my garage, car is on 4 stands, about 18" above the floor, so I have to work with the space I have ...

I am using a transmission jack, and have 2 pins in the lower transmission holes of the bellhousing to guide me

I worked on getting this thing in for about 2h but cannot go much further than the thow out bearing

Any tips / tricks on how to do this? or is it pretty much try, try, tray and try again until you succeed?

Also, I am doing this without amy fluid in the transmission (good thing or I would have it all over me and the floor), so assuming I finally succeed in the installtion, how do I have the gear oil back into the tranny?

Thanks guys!

PS; I'd liketo try again tomorrow morning ... and eventually succeed so any ideas are welcome!

Well, an obvious check would be to take the plastic clutch tool you got with your clutch kit and compare it to the input shaft of the tranny. If they don't match..... rut rohhhh.

If they do match, then it's just a matter of push in, pull out, twist slightly (out of gear), push in, pull out, twist slightly... till it fits.

Well - I took the tool and tried on the old clutch .... it fits

So I guess that means more patience, and more attempts ...

Stick your alignment tool back in the new clutch and make sure it hasn't shifted during all the attempts to stab it.

I did that yesterday and everything was fine as well ...

Finally I will not be trying again today - need to spend time with the wife, and maybe I will have better luck the next time ... likely tomorrow evening since my wife will be going out of town

Will keep you posted on the progress! I just can't wait, my car has been on jacks for the last 4 months, and my goal is to get it on the road in June ...

Watch the angle you're attempting to line up the trans to the bellhousing with. If it's not in a straight line, (up and down, left and right) it's tough to get in. If it's lining up pretty straight and wiggling it isn't helping, you might try putting the trans in gear and turning the output shaft, the splines may be off just enough that it won't line up in the disc. You shouldn't need dowel pins to align the trans to the bell, once the input shaft goes through the disc and into the pilot bushing the bolt holes will line themselves up simply by turning the transmission.

Yes, I noticed that leveling the transmission is critical, but it is tough ... I amy ask a friend to come and give me hand tomorrow, that may help though there is not much room underneath! and will put a gear in ... Thanks!

You will have to move it around a bit to get it to slip in. When I did my clutch, I had the trani on a jack trying to slip it in. No dice. What I wound up doing waslifting it with the jack and then just getting under it a lifting the trani by hand so that I could move it around a little. As you are lifting it in, try twisting it slightly. As said above, the shaft may be just slightly off. You should have enough room with the jack stand to lift in by hand. When I did my 67, I just had it up onrampsand had enough room. You may want to have a friend to help you muscle it in.
Good luck.

Getting help from a friend +1. I had my dad out to help me with putting the tranny in. One person in front (under the engine) the other toward the back. Then we kinda alternated one person would push/pull, the other person would rotate at the same time. ANd it all slid in nicely. Watever you do DO NOT force the tranny into place. This could casue damage.
