65 Fastback - How much?
Well, I just ran across a 65 fastback for sale within 5 miles of my house - I know I would have to plead my case really hard to the wife since I already have a 66 coupe that I am working on (which by the way will be on the road very shortly
) but I had to go and see the car this morning.
Here is how the owner described the car in his ad:
1965 Fastback Mustang 2+2. GT package
Has a cruise-o-matic shifter. This car was a limited model manufacture.
V-8, 289 engine high performance. 302 Heads. Headman headers, New Master Cylinder, New radiator, New fuel tank and fuel lines. C4 transmission. The rims came off of a 1966 Shelby Mustang.
Exterior needs some body work and all trimwork. It is 50% restored. Great for a special project.
Interior- all original and in fair condition. Overall interior in good shape. Dash - excellent shape. Flipdown seat in rear- excellent shape. Driver door panel interior-need work. Driver seat- needs work. Passenger door interior panel- excellent shape. Passenger seat- excellent shape. Console- excellent condition.
Needs a new carborator and ignition switch. Currently car is not running
Here is what I saw and found :
5F09C360526 - 63A A 26 20L 21 6 6
Owner has had the car for 19 years - car was last started 4 years ago ... so not sure how much work to be done on the engine - owner said it was re-built "some" years ago
No rust
Needs front and rear suspension re-done
Needs brakes
Used to be power steering but was disconnected
No AC
Torn headliner
Torn seats
No front grill
No fog lights
No "GT" wheel
Needs new bumpers
Needs body work
Needs new chrome trim all over the car
Rims do not look really good
Needs new door panels ...
To summarize, he says 50% done, he is asking $10,000
I see to be stripped down completly and re-built without rust issues to deal with ... so how much would you offer?
I would over in the 7 k$

First of all, it is not a rare or even a high performance car. It's a 2 barrel carbed C code 289. 10 grand sounds high for a car that you will have to spend another 10 grand to get it right.
If no rust or major filler and body panel straight 10k sounds pretty good. I think if you got it for anything below that just better yet. Considering Dynacorn is selling a 67 shell for 15k - 10k for rust free fastback does not sounds bad to me at all. I'd be interested if you pass it up.
i am not real good with price ideas, but from what i see 10 is not way out of a good asking price, but i would shoot for 8500 or so. Other guys willhave a much better idea of how much it is worth.
It is one thing if you really love the car and want it and feel like it is unique. I know some guys that have 40k into their c-codes verts/fb's and do not at all view it as anything investement related and they'd do it again (driven by emotion). I also know others that have 10k into their k-codes and wont spend a dime unless they get a good ROI (purely business driven). So, you gotta decide what your goal is.
IF your goal is investment, goto traderonline and find out what the potential sales price is for your model. Garden variety fb's in good contion are going for 20-22 and they are very plentiful. If you were talking something rare, you'd then have to look at supply and demand as additional input to potential price (try finding a k-code fb!!!!). If you can spend 6k to get this car into the same shape as a 22k car, you got a good deal! This rationale is only important if you wanna sell within a few years
Not seeing this car, I would guess that 7k would be a good start...obviously if you can gain certainty with what you'd be getting (engine condition, body condition, etc), you could go higher. Hope this helps.

Well - I am looking for an investment - I mean if I buy it, I'll do most of the work myself over an extended period of time - and once finished I will enjoy the ride! as Jim said, I just find that 10 k$ for a non running car is quite a bit ... I may have to spleep on it ... may see clearer tomorrow morning .... or not!
No - do it. After I bought one from a guy on impulse, he said some father andson were looking at it too. When I went back a week or so later, he said theson was pissed. Don't hesitate.

What I meant was I am not looking for an investment / short term approach- I guess you may have understood that through the other part of my post - Jim ! I like the passion ! I just emailed the owner - this morning he told me he would be working late this afternoon and then he is heading to texas tomorrow and Friday so I may have to wait until Saturday anyway ... will see his reaction to my email
